Carbon Dioxide 101
We begin with the fundamentals of carbon dioxide (CO₂), exploring what it is, its properties and its role within the natural environment.
You’ll also consider how CO₂ is currently used and why understanding its characteristics is important when exploring carbon capture and storage, particularly in relation to hydrogen production, low carbon clusters and the strict safety protocols required
Introduction to CCS
We introduce the principles behind Carbon Capture and Storage, exploring why CCS is becoming increasingly important in efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
This section considers the relationship between CCS, hydrogen production and climate change, before introducing the carbon cycle and exploring how carbon moves between the atmosphere, plants, animals, soil and the wider environment.
Processes, Transportation & Storage
We explore the different approaches used to capture CO₂, including pre-combustion capture, post-combustion capture and oxy-fuel combustion.
The section then follows the journey of captured CO₂, looking at how it can be processed, transported and ultimately stored. We consider the different options for CO₂ storage and the conditions required to retain it safely over the long term.
Considerations & Opportunities
CCS presents both significant opportunities and challenges.
We explore the factors that need to be considered when developing and deploying CCS, including cost, energy requirements, infrastructure, economic impacts and the wider role of CCS in achieving net zero.
